First Eucharist at Padre Pio Glenmore Park Parish

First Eucharist at Padre Pio Glenmore Park Parish

More than 100 children recently received the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time at Padre Pio Parish.

Many friends and relatives came from far and near to be present at this celebration of the Eucharist.

These celebrations happened on the weekends of 14/15 and 21/22 March.

Standing at the foot of the altar, ready to present their child for the momentous moment of mystery – when the Lord would give himself in Holy Communion to their child – what were the thoughts and prayers of each parent?

Guided by a facilitator, for four weeks, parents and children had participated in a one hour weekly session with meaningful and age-appropriate activities. To encourage participation, groups had been kept small – thirteen groups in all to cater for the 103 children. All groups met at the same venue, as Bethany generously offered the use of classrooms. This meant everyone was comfortably accommodated with tables, chairs and air-conditioning!

The aim of the program had been to provide a pleasant and meaningful group and community experience, as children move forward in their faith journey, towards receiving  the Eucharist for the first time; providing a sound basis for the child’s further participation in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church.

Facilitators for the program were parents of children in this year’s group preparing to receive First Eucharist as well as several Padre Pio parishioners. As the parish sacramental co-ordinator it has been wonderful for me to witness the facilitators along with the parents working with their children so quietly and harmoniously.

Thank you to all for the love, care and effort invested, for the good of our young parishioners here at Padre Pio Parish!
